How To Transition From The Honeymoon To Reality

By Lanette Zavala, MillennialEdge.com

Sixteen years after my husband and I exchanged vows, I am still learning more about my marriage, my husband, and even myself. It is a journey ordained by God. And I am no expert on it.

But my experience adjusting to the reality of marriage has revealed to me that (1) the road to "Happily Ever After" is located on Planet Earth, not in La-La Land, (2) the road is sometimes smooth and sometime rocky but always on a solid foundation if built on Jesus Christ, its founder, and (3) after the honeymoon, all masks come off.

Long courtships and engagements can ensure a well-built marriage only to a certain extent. Even within the unbiblical practice of living together outside of marriage, they still behave subconsciously like candidates - unless they've lived together for an extremely long time.

Read more for tips, learned by many Christian married couples, on how to transition from the honeymoon to reality.

Locate A Christian Marriage Conference Or Seminar

Strengthen your marriage by attending Word-based events for couples

by Lanette Zavala, MillennialEdge.com

Christian marriage seminars are important because the temptation to divorce is so high. In fact, the threat of divorce has lingered over the heads of married couples since Moses had offered decrees of divorce.

Jesus had explained in Matthew 19:7-9 that Moses had allowed divorce because of the hardness of the people's hearts (putting away their wives).

Thankfully for Christian couples, there are numerous marriage conferences throughout the country that often offer much needed Biblical insight and sometimes help restore wounded relationships.

Many people express only mild interest in attending such events. On the surface, a marriage conference may appear to be "just another conference." While these events cannot guarantee 100 percent on their positive results, they do impact countless marriages - especially for those who are willing to do all they can applying God's Word to change for the better.

So, You're Getting Married...

There is a pre-marriage checklist that every couple should have.

by Lanette Zavala, MillennialEdge.com

Of course, you're making your wedding list, wedding party list, list of possible venues, a narrowing line of wedding dresses to choose from, bridesmaids' dresses, cakes, and so on. That's a good list. Keep up your planning.

In addition to event planning, don't forget some greater essentials. They may not seem important now. But going forward after the wedding, you will want to be prepared for them.

This list is long-lasting. Some items on it may cost and some are pricelessly intangible.

Marriage On The Rock

It's a favorite. Jimmy Evans' Marriage On The Rock is a helpful resource for couples seeking restoration for their relationship as well as for those seeking more insight for their current or future marriage. Pastor Evans makes realistic points on how husbands and wives should approach each other for better communication. Like in his seminars, he stresses issues that are most important to husbands and those that are most important to wives. But he explains how only God can meet both spouses' needs.

What will make any Bible-committed Christian comfortable reading this book is its Bible-based teaching. So, reading this alongside the Bible can actually serve as a thorough devotion with or without your spouse. As this book also discusses how to manage financial issues within marriage, purchasing the paperback version might be a smarter choice than the hard cover edition for significant cost-saving.

Pastor Evans offers a number of different materials with the theme "Marriage On The Rock". Marriage On The Rock: Couple's Discussion Guide is also available.

Tony Evans Speaks Out About Divorce And Remarriage

Dr. Tony and Lois Evans, Pastor and First Lady of Oakcliff Bible Fellowship

Another Evans to look for when there is an opportunity to do a devotion on marriage is Dr. Tony Evans. This author and pastor of Oakcliff Bible Fellowship (in Dallas TX) has been preaching since before opening the doors of his church in 1976.

In Dr. Evans' book, actually titled Tony Evans Speaks Out About Divorce And Remarriage, the message is crystal-clear and insightful. His uncompromising views about marriage and divorce have been broadcast since the beginning years of his radio ministry. His books on marriage contain spoken messages on the subject. Prepare for a Biblical teaching on marriage that requires husbands and wives to honor God through their marriage.

Not a message of condemnation yet not a rosie message that will agree with a trip to divorce court over unbiblical grounds. If you are serious about overcoming the challenges of marriage and accepting Jesus' calling on it, you will find this book to be a Biblical tool.
